A diet that consists of less meat and more plant foods will benefit you greatly. The mass production of feed alone that is consumed by animals raised on manufactured farms is astronomical and has a huge impact on our environment. Fertilizers, chemicals, pesticides and even the amount of water used is astounding. Plant foods like rice, beans and tofu have a much lower impact on the environment and offer many more nutrients that can contribute to a healthy diet. You may choose to take one night of the week in which you exclude meat from your family menu and serve veggies only. Perhaps a green salad that includes lettuce, tomato, cucumber, colorful bell peppers and carrots served with grilled veggies such as eggplant, squash and corn will not only be filling for your family but also healthy and delicious.

When planning your family’s menu, commit to choosing places you shop for food that are close to home. Your local farmer’s markets, supermarkets and co-ops are great places to find foods that are naturally grown and use no harmful ingredients. You may also know someone locally that sells homegrown items right off of their farm. If you have a bit of a green thumb you can grow your own items. You might choose to grow tomatoes, peppers, squash, eggplant or cucumbers that you and your family can enjoy when harvested. You can also grow your own herbs to prepare meals with right in your own home.

Selecting organically grown and raised foods will be a great way to keep your family healthy and to help contribute to preserving the environment. Organic foods offer more nutrients than manufactured farm-grown foods provide. When you choose organic, you don’t have to worry about any of the harmful chemicals that are used by manufactured farmers to yield an enormous crop. Organically grown veggies will be higher in antioxidants and vitamins than those that are grown in mass production. The same holds true with meats and many dairy products as well. Many markets offer organic food selections to help their customers maintain healthy food choices.

Eating fruits and veggies within their season lets you know that they are natural and not grown in an artificial environment. Foods that are grown far away are treated with chemicals that can be harmful. These traveling foods are not allowed to ripen naturally making them less healthy than foods that are grown and eaten within their season. Many fruits and veggies that you purchase in season can be blanched and frozen so that you are able to enjoy them year round. This will allow you to purchase as much as you would like in order to have them whenever you want.

Food is the number one item that fills most landfills. Massive amounts of food are thrown away on a daily basis. This rotting food in landfills produces methane gas which can be very harmful to the environment. Committing to prepare only the amount of food that your family will eat can help eliminate the amount of waste that you and your family produce. Having leftover food doesn’t mean it necessarily has to be thrown away. Foods can be frozen for later use or they can be used to prepare other meals such as casseroles or soups. Keep in mind that packaged foods produce waste material as well so choosing whole foods will also help eliminate waste.
